Chapter 10

Karat had anticipated the possibility of having to leave Polis urgently long before things came to a head. The more he was learning about Byron, the more he realized the ugly quasi was not going to let a major affront slide, especially since the humiliation he suffered became the talk of the town. Besides, it would be easy as pie to take his revenge on some half-baked newbie raider and a teenage girl, right? In any case, sticking it to Carbide—the real culprit of the worst put-down Byron had suffered in his entire career in the Hive—would be much, much harder. After all, the entire inner circle in Polis was essentially making a buck off of the man’s outsized doubling skill. No one in the right mind would kill the goose that laid the golden egg or let any of their peers, however disgruntled, do so. If it ever came down to a choice between the doubler and the scheming quasi, the town would really have no choice at all, but somehow Karat couldn’t see the spat between the stable’s titans getting that far. Under any regime or plausible scenario, getting rid of a designated fall guy would be so much easier.

Any abrupt moves were rife with additional complications and extra expense. Karat didn’t want any of that, so little by little, he had been taking steps to prepare the eventual exit. Their immediate destination left no doubts in his mind. A certain place, not quite two days of relatively straightforward travel away from Polis, still had plenty of hastily abandoned weapons and ammunition their little party would have no problem collecting. Even if another group of the farmers or some other splinter group took possession of the tank stalled in the middle of the road and everything in it, the BRDM they hid in the brush would most likely still be there and could be used to transport the loot at least for some distance. With Nimbler driving, Diana spotting, and him manning the big gun, they would stand a reasonably good chance of making it to a different stable or, better yet, another neutral “county fair” frequented by traders where they could sell the entire lot, the scout car and all, to the highest bidder. From there, cash in hand, they would have their pick of destinations. Alternatively, if the stars really aligned, the heavy weapons still on location could be used to take on another scraper if one conveniently presented itself. Didn’t Carbide say during their meeting that as many as four had been spotted in the area? If the alien beasts were still there, the four of them could even reasonably expect a much easier passage since most of the ghouls would be staying away from that unfinished housing development and its immediate vicinity. But they would figure the details out once they got close and checked the place out, Karat told himself. There was no way of predicting every little thing up front. No
